An experiment in organic software visualization

This visualization, called code_swarm, shows the history of commits in a software project. A commit happens when a developer makes changes to the code or documents and transfers them into the central project repository.

Stereoscopy (often abbreviated to 'stereo' or '3D') adds the extra dimension of depth to images, both moving and still, real and computer-generated.

3D Package -> 2D + DepthMap -> Philips Encoded 2D+Depth file

The interface to a Philips 3D monitor is based on 2D plus Z depth. Adjacent to the traditional 2D image a Z image is added, also named depth map. This is an image with the same size as the 2D image. Each pixel of the depth map corresponds to a pixel of the 2D image and indicates the distance of the corresponding 2D pixel to the observer.

The passer-by is able to see the full 3D imagery without having to stand in a particular place or wear special eyewear: something that has not been possible until recently.
